The Capitol Steps

Kick off election season with the funniest political comedy in the nation at Arkansas State University-Mountain Home on Friday, August 24. The Capitol Steps formed 30 years ago to create musical parodies and skits that convey a special brand of satirical humor. They are a group who set out to ridicule the very people and places that employed them; a group who puts the “mock” in democracy. The Capitol Steps will perform at The Vada Sheid Community Development Center at 7 p.m. on Friday, August 24 as the Performing Arts Series (PAS) season opener.

The Capitol Steps have performed for five U.S. presidents, and in all 50 states. The only complaints the Steps seem to get are from politicians and personalities who are not included in the program. The Capitol Steps, who have recorded 32 albums, can be heard on National Public Radio stations nationwide.

Based in Washington, D.C., the performers have worked in a total of 18 Congressional offices, and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience. Most cast members have worked on Capitol Hill; some for Democrats, some for Republicans. No matter who holds the office, there’s never a shortage of material, which is updated constantly. Current examples of the trending topics include songs about Mitt Romney’s plea to the GOP (“Help Me Fake It to the Right”) and President Obama’s class warfare (“If I Tax a Rich Man”). The Capitol Steps tackle both sides of the political spectrum.

The Capitol Steps is one of four shows presented as part of this year’s ASUMH Performing Arts Series at The Vada Sheid Community Development Center on the ASUMH campus. See all PAS shows for $100, or $35 per show (plus fees). Student discounts are available at half price (plus fees).
